Shower Curtains Are Not All The Same
Shower curtains and liners are made with various materials. You are probably more familiar with the most common types being vinyl or plastic. These types are considered to be toxic.
However, when looking at the vinyl and plastic liners or even shower curtains, look for those that are made of EVA (ethylene vinyl acetate) or PEVA (polyethylene vinyl acetate) making them safe vinyl’s. Also look for those that are phthalates and BPA free which are often found on plastics.
Shower Curtain Materials
Fabric: Fabric curtains such as: cotton, nylon, polyester or hemp can be washed
May appear warmer, softer and more natural
Easier to match with bathroom accessories, décor and even linens.
Hemp: Organic and chemical free. Do not require a liner. Resistant to molds and bacteria. Durable and long lasting. Dry quickly. Natural Dyes.
Cotton: Washable. Free of toxic chemicals
Vinyl: Wipe down with vinegar and water. Low Maintenance. Choose those that are made from EVA or PEVA. Come in various patterns. Match with bathroom décor.
Plastic: Plastic shower curtains are made from vinyl and PVC. PVC is believed to be toxic. Not all vinyl is free of toxic chemicals. There are other alternatives which are safe such as hemp, cotton, nylon and vinyl made from EVA or PEVA.
Plastic and vinyl curtains with a printed design may hold up under a few machine washing, but inexpensive curtains may have designs that flake off, fade or crack after repeated washing.
If vinyl or plastic shower curtains and liners are free of toxic chemicals, they do have some advantages.
